I did it again.

Right after last week’s discussion of the backlash from drawing funny pictures of women, I had to go and draw Miley Cyrus for an upcoming cartoon (super-secret sneak preview on this page). But I think I’m safe on this one; there’s not much a cartoonist could do to Miley that she hasn’t done to herself (that didn’t come out right). I mean, the main criticism I get when I draw women is that I’m either “making them look ugly”, or, that I’m “objectifying them”. I think Miley’s already accomplished both things on her own.

What really disturbs me is that I caved to the Zeitgeist and put Miley in a cartoon at all, but she’s virtually unavoidable (in this case, she turned up in a poll* about congressional approval-ratings). (Congress’s is higher.)

Still, I take comfort in believing that there’s somebody, somewhere, who’s risen above peer pressure, and given Miley the ultimate insult. By ignoring her. I take my hat off to him. Or her…

Miley

  1. I love this strip!! A saw many of these while I was living in the Seattle area around 5 years ago. I also remember your comic strip was in the “Classified Ads” section of the Seattle Post-Inttellegencer. I heard it’s only on line but, for Seattle PI, GOOD RIDDANCE! Your strip is still standing along with the “Prickly” strip, as good, conservative strips that I enjoy. It feels good to see you are at competition with “La Cucuracha”, “Doonesbury” (It good, but I disargree with it MOST of the time, and “Candorville.” Thank you.

  2. I’m glad you brought this blog to my attention.
You are such a lightning rod to the left. Their kneejerk reaction is to shut down opposing views. They are anti first amendment.
By the way Miley is so ubiquitous that even conservative sites use her image to draw in visitors.

  3. I have read your strip for years and have loved it. A niece once asked me if I was a liberal or a conservative. I told her that I was socially liberal but fiscally conservative. Her puzzled look prompted me to add, I will give you all of your rights to do as you wish. Just don,t expect me to pay for your bad decisions.

  4. NOW THAT OBAMA HAS SUGGESTED THE WASH. REDSKINS CHANGE THEIR NAME DO YOU THINK HE WILL GET THE INDIAN VOTE FOR THE DEM. IN 2014? HE HAS WRAPPED UP THE MUSLIM VOTE BY EXCLUDING THEM FROM OBAMA CARE . HOW ABOUT THE ORIENTALS?

    • If excluding the Muslims was the worst thing he’s done, it would be his gleaming star in the heavens. His willing accomplices in the Congressional seats should be – along with him Biden, Pelosi and
Reid – impeached and/or jailed for UNAmerican activities.

  5. Bruce:

Thank you for you very on-target commentary about what is wrong with the leadership in the White House.

    Keep it up!

  6. I’ve read Mallard since, well, probably the beginning, and LOVE it. Sure wish the Lame Stream Media was as astute. Thanks for the blog, it’s good to know the ‘behind the scenes’ thinking. Keep up the good work.

  7. Wonderful site! Thank God we have you to counter the bull spread by Trudeau and his lovely wife Jane (Far-Left) Pauley. Perfect pair.

  8. Love, love, love your cartoon strip. Love it when you mention two of my favorite people, Rush Limbaugh and Diana Gabaldon…keep up the good work! 🙂

  9. Great you’re doing a blog. Don’t pay any attention to the lefties who go out of their way to leave nasty comments about you every day. Most of them are government workers so they have lots of time on their hands and nothing important to do anyway. Regard their scorn as a badge of honor!

  10. When will Mallard be announcing his candidacy for POTUS?
We could do worse. We have. And we will…
I can see your BO cartoon modified with MF holding a NO BO poster.

    Keep up the good work!

  11. I think you should switch to a daily blog….I need some sanity after reading the paper or listening to mainstream media by mistake,

  12. Dear beautiful Duck, I have loved your strip from the first time I came across it. At first, I thought it was a fluke, but subsequent strips became my daily fix. Unfortunately, it appears in the local rag called the News and Observer to which I refuse to buy or subscribe. Hence, I have to drive to my local Starbucks and thumb through the funny pages for my daily fix. You and Piraro are my salvation. Cente ano!

  13. I noticed that you, someday, hope to teach. You’ve been there for a long time. Keep it up. You are one of my heroes. John Wayne is the other one.

  14. Bruce, I have been a follower of Mallard for quite some time now. I enjoy the quirkiness of your commentary and the general shunning of those entertainment people that hog the limelight … that said, picking on Miley is well worth the effort, I think.
I am waiting to see the spin you put on this Disney Sweeheart and what she has become.

  15. I love ducks especially conservative ones that live by the end of a pen. Our local fish wrap the Pasadena Star News has been running the strip daily for some years. It originally was the sole cartoon on the editorial page which, besides a few random conservative letters to the editor (mine included), was the only counter balance to liberal editorials and slanted news. Even with this one tiny token of conservatism among all the pages letters were printed from tolerant liberals who demanded that Mallard be banned. So a second cartoon (at the top of the page, the duck sat at the bottom) was added featuring left wing views from a variety of third rate artists. But that didn’t stop the all inclusive leftie protesters letters. Thus despite my protest letter as of about six months ago Mallard is now buried in the comics section in the middle of 23 other strips. Not long ago a letter was printed about the racist duck. Keep on ruffling their feathers Mallard.

  16. Mallard is GREAT strip, it lets me know common sense is still alive… and that truth, justice and the American WAY is only an overgrown path that needs weeding.

  17. Bruce…I have been following your strip and enjoying it for years. You, of course, do have your liberal enemies but that only proves you are doing something right.

  18. I love Mallard! I don’talways agree with your “bigotted and hate filled” rants but it is refreshing to see something other than the “mainstream media” view. Keep up the good work.

  19. As Margaret Thatcher once said, “The problem with this is that eventually, you run out of other people’s money.”

Uh-huh. Next time I end up going on a rant about Miley Cyrus in order to make sure people don’t suspect I’m actually masturbating to her, I’ll describe it as “caving to the Zeitgeist.”

They are very convincing and will certainly work.
Still, the posts are very quick for novices. May just you please lengthen
them a little from subsequent time? Thank you for the
    post.
